The saddest part of all of this is, we seem to be spending a great deal of
money recreating, in some abstracted - and, in some ways, estimated and
imprecisely aggregated - datasets for broadband access when in fact actual,
very granular and accurate data already exists at the telcos, ISPs, et
cetera. Billing records, for example. They play games of insisting the
data is proprietary, and cry about protections and competition when in fact
many exclusive franchises exist (e.g. cable companies) and consider also
that population densities and prospective customers bases are really no
great mystery to anyone with even an inkling of census and demographics
data. And we additionally then get the great divide of marketing, where
providers advertise ubiquitous access (when in fact it isn't actually so
ubiquitous), versus application to the government for subsidy, where they
express the exact opposite, underestimating their assets in the hopes of
getting funding - yet another disparity that doesn't actually want to be
revealed.

It's one huge boondoggle, in my humble opinion. I could not resist throwing
in my $0.02, but enough of my commentary, carry on.

I know the OECD has broadband metrics by country (
<http://oecd.org/sti/ict/broadband> http://oecd.org/sti/ict/broadband). You
might find some breakdown by state on their site as well.

Subject: [Geowanking] Mapping Broadband in Florida

Hey Wankers,

Any of you have any idea about where to find sources for mapping of
broadband technology deployed in the US, specifically Florida?

Thanks!

Catherine
