[Mail from SpatiaLite mailing list cross posted to Geowanking] At FOSSGIS 2010 in Osnabrück next week in there will be a talk with the nice title "SpatiaLite, the Shapefile of the future?" (in german). This idea already came up in the Geowanking mailing list and to me this has some justification.
But to be really a successor of Shapefile I would say that SpatiaLite should support curves! Are there any plans (and volunteers :->) to implement this in Spatialite and if yes, about when?
