In the beginning, geowanking was populated mostly by semantic web hackers and headmap-locative media types learning about mapping. Arguably, you could say that open street map, geoRSS, and FOSS4G started here. Later on serious map pros started joining geowanking initially from OGC WFS, WMS and map server communities and later from mainstream GIS shops.

At the very first Where2.0 conference geowankers were officially outcasts, At later Where2.0 and other conferences, geowankers took more of a leading role, and are often featured keynoters, and session leaders.

The real turning point was the publication of the Mapping Hacks book by Schuyler Erle, Rich Gibson, and Jo Walsh and a cast of ~hundreds`. Shortly thereafter google launched gmaps and gearth, and the rest is history,

Joshua Schacter started the geowanking list in 2003 on his own domain [ [email protected]] - about the same time he started experimenting with GeoURL. one of the first efforts to geocode web objects.

Abouyt two years ago, Joshua handed of admin to Brady Forrest, O'Reilly media who set up the new domain geowanking.org <http://geowanking.org>.

I'm drawing a blank - who started or how did geowanking start?
