Hey all, Joe Stump CTO of SimpleGeo here. A few things to note about our Places
DB that might help you make your decision:

1. We're focusing on 100% unencumbered data. We own our POI data outright,
rather than licensing it from places like NAVTEQ or InfoGroup, etc. This means
we have less coverage (e.g. ~7m in the US), but that they're totally
unencumbered. Literally, do whatever you wish with the data.

2. We allow you to write data back into the system, which we clean, conflate,
etc. and will merge back into the mainline (in the last 30 days we've had about
100,000 edits via the API). These edits can be public or private and you can,
additionally, store other bits of data with it (e.g. attach a rating for a
restaurant).

3. We're working hard to expand coverage. We just dropped 600,000 CA POIs a few
weeks ago and have datasets for ~12 other countries and are in active
discussions to get even more data (all unencumbered as well).

We understand our product isn't for everyone. There's a lot of great
place-relate products and databases out there. We've focused on building tools
and services on top of unencumbered data. We don't believe you should be able
to copyright facts. The downside of this, of course, is that we have less data.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.

Cheers,

--Joe
