Guys, please, the wiki, use the wiki. This is supposed to end up as a book ;)
The wiki is a good place to put final documenation and decisions. But is a rather poor venue for a discussion. (no, the "discussion" pages don't cut it the same) The link you gave illustrates to me the current frustration of finding appropriate tools. It's just a listing of projects - where the project name may or may not be indicative of what the tool/library actually *does*. Wading through all those links isn't very fun either - as many projects have large amounts of "we're the best" or something without really just laying out what the tool can do. Why don't we treat it like an actual 'catalogue' - or use cases like Rich pointed out. Hrm, I want to convert a shapefile - what are my options? I want to do geographic mathematical operations (areas, distances) - what tools are there? I may know or be working in several languages - what I really want to solve is the *problem*, and then I will choose the language(s) that solve that problem. also - I'm not aware of what the "book" is? Is it the "Free GIS Book" mentioned on the wiki? Andrew
