I will be geocoding the IPEDS data and post it to http://
www.mapmap.org as a CSV and shapefile later this week.
Thanks again, everyone, for your help tracking this down.
Cheers,

Subject: RE: Postsecondary Data (Licensing?)
Hello, Scott:
Thank you for your interest in our data. What do you mean by
"hd2004"? The location data for the postsecondary institutions are
listed in the Institutional Characteristics (IC) component of
IPEDS. It includes address, city, state, and zipcode. The IPEDS
data are not restricted.
Hope this helps! Aurora

Subject: Postsecondary Data (Licensing?)
Aurora D'Amico,
This email was automatically sent through the Contact NCES
webmaster link
on the NCES website based on the category area the user selected. The
topic area of the question is (Postsecondary Data) and as such can
probably best be answered by you because of your expertise in this
area.

Message: I downloaded the hd2004 file from
http://nces.ed.gov/ipedspas/dct/download/index.asp?
Year=2004&Survey=1 . It
didn't come with any license / fair usage information. Can you
provide me
with a text file or a hyperlink?
I noticed that it didn't contain latitude / longitude points,
although in
other places on your website users are able to query for schools
within a
certain radius of a specific zipcode. This leads me to believe that
there
is spatial data being stored and used somewhere. Is this available for
download (the file containing the spatial data)?
Barring that, I would like to add latitude / longitude points from
http://geocoder.us (US Census Bureau data) for use in an online
mapping
website. The map would simply show all US Colleges and Universities
on a
map. I would then like to repost the resulting data as a CSV file
and a
shapefile at http://www.mapmap.org for anyone to download. If you
would
like, I would be happy to send the data back to you to be hosted on
your
site.
Thanks for your help in this matter.
Regards,
Scott Davis
