It is fairly straightforward to simply cache the imagery tiles from the GE/GMaps servers, but it certainly does violate the usage agreement.
For an example of how this is done (in C) check out the maemo mapper project http://gnuite.com:8080/nokia770/maemo-mapper/ Jeff On 12/14/06, Alexandre Leroux <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:
Hi list, We have an in-house virtual globe used for weather and meteorology purposes. This app is mostly coded in C and uses GDAL/OGR. With all the high resolution imagery out there (GE, VE, Y!, etc.), we're wondering if there would be a way to access high resolution datasets for our own in-house virtual globe. I know about the Virtual Earth plugin for NASA World Wind. http://www.brains-n-brawn.com/default.aspx?vDir=veworldwind It's in Java (and my developer hates Java :-) but I guess it would be possible to salvage the protocol to use the same VE data within our own virtual globe. I'm well aware we could implement WMS support and thus access the many WMS servers available (e.g. http://wms-sites.com/catalog ). But we're really looking for high resolution imagery data such as the one licensed by Google and Microsoft (as far as I know NASA World Wind does not have that many high res data, especially for Canada :-). Google Maps tiles require an API key tied to a website url. Maybe something could be hacked, but could complicated (and not to say, probably against the API license!). I'm not sure OpenLayers could help either. Any clue? Would there be a way to do that freely without the need of a Google Earth Enterprise or any other data licensing scheme? Thanks!
