How about the BlackBerry 8800, released this week? It's another GSM
with GPS, and thinner than the pretty BlackBerry Pearl. Anyone
messed with one...?
I've had one for less than a week now. I really like it (no buyer-bias
here either...this is just a 60-day loaner).
Network:
- Cingular / EDGE. Good connectivity / fairly fast. - Was up on Mt.
Hood (Gov. Camp -

over the weekend, and had a decent data connection.
GPS: - First time I tried to get a fix (outside, cloudy day), I
couldn't get one.
- Later that night, while in my house, I did get a position. -
Subsequent position reacquire / update speeds have been good.
- Just got the first fix in 24 hours from inside my house - 4 satellites
/ >10 seconds
Browser: - Better than the Pearl for one reason: there is now a
'Desktop View' option, which allows vertical scrolling.
- No AJAX support ... so no Google Maps. GLM client works fine, for
whatever that's worth.
- Opera Mini installed, but does not run on the 8800
Battery Life:
- Very good. I've gone for 3 days, moderate use (but little voice use)
without needing to recharge.
Form Factor:
- Feel is nice. Fits well in hand. As good (or almost as good) as the
Palm Treo.
- I find the screen is easy to read...I have browsed for an hour or so,
and didn't get a headache.
No camera / no WiFi.
