Thanks guys for the responses.
We run mapserver internally and I was trying to avoid it as a consumer-facing app could be pretty taxing on the system. It's much more fun to use someone else's resources :). But its sounding like that might be my best bet. For anyone else that is interested, Andrew pointed me to GraphServer (http://graphserver.sourceforge.net/) to do rudimentary routing on the images. It's an interesting solution - when you think of pairing up TIGER data, with some basic base layers and then something like MapServer to serve up the tiles you get a fairly robust, open solution. You can then just make a WMS call and get back a .png or .jpg ________________________________ From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Ryan Sarver Sent: Tuesday, April 24, 2007 1:22 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [Geowanking] Map Image APIs Hey guys, Im working on a free mobile app and I am trying to find a FREE API that meets the following criteria. Does anyone know of one that fits?? - Returns a single image - no JS or HTML. It's a mobile app so we can only show images. We should be able to specify the dimensions and the zoom level - Multiple points place on the map - the Yahoo Image API automatically places a star in the middle of the image, we would like to be able to show a list of results or have a blank image so that we can map our own results on top - Routing? Does anyone offer route tracing in a free service? Not critical, but just curious... I guess in general I wanted to kick off a discussion of the available Mapping APIs (free and not free) that work for mobile devices. Thoughts?
