Have you taken a look http://where.com/create

This is a new free service that lets anyone quickly get a GPS capable
application up and running on a cell phone.

As a point of full disclosure I work for Where.com evangelizing to
developers, but that being said WHERE is giving away quite a bit to any
third party developer that wants to try out creating an application. They
are not only giving away access to a phone's GPS which is almost impossible
to get access to any other way; but also MapQuest maps and driving
directions, sending text messages from a widget, and development in html
like (with Ajax) language on a mobile phone. WHERE is available on a dozen
Sprint phones right now with other CDMA carriers hopefully following soon.

The WHERE framework was developed internally by uLocate and is used in
MapQuest Find Me and Helio Buddy Beacon so this is not a toy but an
application capable of running full-fledged commercial applications.
WHERE.com just rolled this out to outside developers 6 weeks ago so there
may be some gaps in the documentation. Please take a look and try it out in
the online emulator, no phone is necessary for that. And if you don't
understand anything please ask me a question directly or post in the group:
http://groups.google.com/group/wheregps
Several people monitor that group so you should get a quick response.

 Hey guys,

Im working on a free mobile app and I am trying to find a FREE API that
meets the following criteria. Does anyone know of one that fits??

- Returns a single image – no JS or HTML. It's a mobile app so we
can only show images. We should be able to specify the dimensions and the
zoom level

- Multiple points place on the map – the Yahoo Image API
automatically places a star in the middle of the image, we would like to be
able to show a list of results or have a blank image so that we can map our
own results on top

- Routing? Does anyone offer route tracing in a free service? Not
critical, but just curious…

I guess in general I wanted to kick off a discussion of the available
Mapping APIs (free and not free) that work for mobile devices.

Thoughts?
