It is fascinating.

Earlier this evening Molly, 18 and occasionally responsible, ventured to ask
of someone knew where Madeline was (10). I did, but showed Molly this
article as an entry point into discussion.

When I showed her the map I became emotional and told her that _this_ was
what I was grasping at, perhaps not always intentionally, when we were
writing Mapping Hacks.

This way of considering the question of how far kids are allowed to explore
by _using a bloody map_ is wonderful!

A friend who used to be involved in transportation policy wonkery for the
Senate would ask groups 'raise your hand if you walked, or road your bike,
to school...now keep your hand up if your kids walk or ride their bikes to
school.'

As we know, all(most) all of the hands went down.

And that was a telling anecdote, but this map and the story that goes with
it are just stellar as examples of showing this thing that we are now trying
to do. It isn't really anti-traditional GIS-a lot of the traditional tools
do exactly what we need, but it is sort of sideways to the concerns of
traditional geographers.

Rich

I love this map of how a family over time has changed in terms of their
children (at age 8) distance to roam.

Great Grandfather: 8 miles (to go fishing)
Grandfather: 1 mile (to the woods)
Mother: 1/2 a mile (to the local pool)
Son: 300 yards (end of the street)
