I've looked at the Wigle database about a month ago, and it seems that while
the database itself is a great source for geocoded SSIDs (and more
importantly, MAC addresses), the licensing is somewhat restrictive.
Restrictive licensing, huh?
Prolly a another great time to mention that WiFiMaps.com needs
some help -- I need help rebuilding the application, now that the project
has only me working on it again. My partner ate my project, but I've
wrested the domain from him, and will continue where we left off.
I am still debating whether to use a GPL license, or a CC variety.
The idea is to give out the data, and make sure that some other
organization cannot just sell the data -- we want to make sure that it is
used, and perpetuates, and that WiFiMaps.com is cited. This might be a
good time to ask the community (and Brashear at the same time) what they
think about community-collected WiFi geo data licensing.
Otherwise, I think I can provide a DVD of the WiFi data we've
collected, though I think it would make more sense to push it out via
WFS or the XML flavor of the moment. Interested? Thoughts?
