UCSB is a hotbed of this stuff-Dan Montello has published a lot in the area of spatial cognition, some call it enviro psych. There's a rich collection of literature Barbara Tversky has also published a great deal. I'm personally obsessed with spatial cognition and urban wayfinding. UMI has a mini library on the subject
