Ian,
Have you done any personal research or study on the subject? I’m
tempted to torture my coworkers with a little survey on the subject
just to see what the results would be. What, for example, would be
the differences between landmarks commonly used by my male coworkers
when compared with my female coworkers?

UCSB is a hotbed of this stuff-Dan Montello has published a lot in
the area of spatial cognition, some call it enviro psych. There's a
rich collection of literature Barbara Tversky has also published a
great deal. I'm personally obsessed with spatial cognition and urban
wayfinding. UMI has a mini library on the subject

Landon,
Much of what you are talking about is known as mental maps in
Geography. It really got started in 1976 when Peter Gould published
his first work on the topic. There is also a fair bit of awareness
of this in the urban design community. The links will lead you
various places, the last to "fear and loathing in LA".
Enjoy,

I’ve been shopping for a home with my wife the last few

I’ve posted a short article about this on my OpenJUMP blog.
I’d like to hear comments on this topic from fellow geowankers.
