Joe,
Something else to consider is the route you're planning on taking. I
road across the country in 2004, (RI to OR) and I'd guess we were out of
cell phone range about 40 to 50 percent of the time.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions!
The phone I currently use is a Sony Ericsson W600i, but my plan is up now or
shortly... So I'm thinking of getting a new phone and this project would be
a great excuse to splurge.
I'm also ok with buying a cheap(er) system since most of my free time is
spent training for the ride. I guess the reason I wanted to go with a cell
phone based approach is if I buy hardware, I'll reuse a phone. A big GPS
unit/tracking subscription would only be helpful for the summer than I'd
have to put it up on ebay :)

I use a phone with java that supports bluetooth (I think you need JSR82,
I use Sony Ericsson a K750i or W800) and a small bluetooth GPS like
a Holux GPSlim 236 or one of the many others available on ebay. I then
use MobiTrack Pro software updating to my own server. Works pretty well,
I have it set to update every 5 minutes and it doesn't really use much
data, I had it on for an entire day and it only used 200kb. (Which cost
me 40p in the uk on a plan with no specific data allowance).
Mobitrack Pro costs around $25 but I believe there's various similar
open source things. I guess it would help if you let us know what cell
phone you have to give an idea of what it might support.

You can also try where (http://developer.where.com) It works on many

where users.

Run.GPS works well for recording and reporting my marathon
training. The prereqs narrow down your options though. You need a
windows mobile phone and internal/external GPS.

Hello all,
Long time reader, first time poster...
I'm working on a personal project to track my bike ride across the
country
this summer. I wanted to do something with live tracking but not
have to
buy an expensive gps unit and subscription. I'm also looking to
carry as
little weight as possible.
So I was thinking, why not use my cell phone (or a cell phone that
has the
potential to do the following)? I'm thinking I could use some
software (and
hopefully not have to write it) to triangulate my position via cell
towers
(similar to how the iphone works). That averaged position would
then be
submitted somehow to my server which takes it and updates my map.
The problem is: is there such software to triangulate, ideally one
that will
also take that position and send it out to something (email, txt,
whatever)?
Any other ideas, advice, help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Joe
