However, Project Wonderland is free open source software for creating real-time 3d environments: https://lg3d-wonderland.dev.java.net/ There is also a nice writeup about Project Wonderland from a recent technical session at JavaOne about one month ago: http://java.sun.com/javaone/sf/2008/articles/projectwonderland.jsp Based on your comments about Second Life, I suspect that Project Wonderland may not meet your requirements either. Still, I thought it was at least worth mentioning.
