I've never met them, but a friend of mine was doing some work with
them while she was finishing up her phd in public health.

They're a nonprofit trying to do work around urban development and
health issues in Los Angeles. One of they ways they are trying to
expose the problems / issues / solutions is through a mapping
interface. They've collected a ton of info from various sources on
economic and public health in LA.

For example, i can load up data on poverty rates for neighborhoods
then overlay info on percentage of people without health insurance.

The data is there, but with their site they are collecting it and
making it understandable. They help social service agencies and
nonprofits understand what's happening LA, by visualizing mapping data
from a ton of sources.

Play with the advanced mapping section on their site, it's a little
slow, but much more of an accessible interface to this than the
traditional GIS. To me it's neogeography applied to urban development
and health issues. Anybody can see the data, instead of a few folks,
and they are working with nonprofits so they can understand how to use
it. It's the kind think you can do once you've started getting data
collected from a bunch of sources.

One of the debates last year at FOSS4G was how to organize this data,
how to make a store of all the geo data out there and make it
accessible. It's been one of those tricks, we know there is tons of
good data out there, and we want more, and we know how to display some
of it, but how to make it explorable and sharable. For their one
narrow area, related to health and los angeles, healthy city, is doign
a remarkably good job.
