Dear GEP-ED'ers,

In follow-up to Ron's email regarding the international conference Planet under
Pressure, held 26-29 March 2012 in London:

This conference is likely to be one of the largest and most relevant
interdisciplinary global change conferences in these years. It follows up
previous mega-events in Amsterdam (2001) and Beijing (2006). The conference
Planet under Pressure is also meant to inform decision-makers at all levels on
the way towards the Rio+20 events later in 2012.

The London conference addresses natural and social sciences, and will hence be
full of panels on the natural science aspects of global environmental change.
However, there will also be many social science panels. It could be important
for the standing of our community in these networks that good, cutting-edge
social science research is presented.

While conference theme C: "Governing across scales: innovative stewardship of
the Earth system" is the main entry for our community, the other conference
themes offer interesting opportunities as well to showcase environmental policy
research, in particular for innovative approaches in interdisciplinary research.

The social science input is organised by the International Human Dimensions
Programme on Global Environmental Change (IHDP). The governance-related
questions are organised by a ten-year core project of the IHDP, the Earth
System Governance Project.

The Earth System Governance Project is a large international research network,
set up in 2009, to explore political solutions and novel, more effective
governance systems to cope with the current transitions in the biogeochemical
systems of our planet. The normative context of the Project is sustainable
development: the Project sees earth system governance not only as a question of
governance effectiveness, but also as a challenge for political legitimacy and
social justice. More information is available at
www.earthsystemgovernance.org<http://www.earthsystemgovernance.org/>.

If you are interested in joining the London Conference Planet under Pressure
and would like to be involved in the conference sessions organised by the Earth
System Governance Project, please contact the Project's executive director,
Ruben Zondervan, at Lund University,
[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>. Ruben and his team
at the Earth System Governance International Project Office in Lund will assist
in coordinating the development and submission of sessions on global
environmental governance. We invite suggestions for sessions, speakers, or
topics and will serve as information broker. Ruben will also attend this year's
ISA conference in Montreal.

The Earth System Governance Project also organises major conferences in May
2011 in Colorado and in 2012 in Lund. Both focus on the governance-related
questions of global environmental change and earth system transformation.

Best regards, on behalf of the Earth System Governance Project

Frank

Subject: [gep-ed] Planet Under Pressure 2012 International Conference. Call for
sessions open. Deadline 18th March 2011

All,
This conference (in London in March 2012) may be of interest to some. It's
being organized by International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme, DIVERSITAS,
International Human Dimensions Programme, World Climate Research Programme, and
their Earth System Science Partnership. It seems rather more sincerely
interdisciplinary and welcoming to both natural and social sciences and
humanities than many such conferences.

"Given the mounting evidence of the sheer scale of global changes we are
witnessing, the scientific community has a responsibility to urge public
officials, citizens, and private firms in all countries to focus on the need
for major policy changes to avoid major irreparable damage to our planet. I
sincerely hope the 2012 conference will make a significant contribution to
placing sustainability on everyone's agenda." Elinor Ostrom, 2009 Nobel
Laureate Economics, Chief Scientific Advisor to the Planet Under Pressure
