CALL FOR CONTRIBUTORS: EAST ASIA AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Dear Colleagues,
 
We have been asked by Routledge to serve as editors of the ROUTLEDGE HANDBOOK 
OF EAST ASIA AND THE ENVIRONMENT. The book is intended to be a key resource for 
readers interested in the cultural, social and policy aspects of the 
environment in East Asia (East, Northeast and Southeast Asia).
 
We are now seeking expert contributors in the following areas:
 
CULTURE, SOCIETY AND POLITICS
+East Asian culture and the environment
+Environment and society in East Asia 
+Environmental politics and policymaking in East Asia
 
WATER
+Water scarcity: the growing crisis of water availability
+Water pollution: causes, consequences and controversies
+Dams: ecological and social considerations

ATMOSPHERE
+Air quality: local, urban and national atmospheric pollution
+Transboundary air pollution: regional acid rain and smoke
+The ‘brown cloud’: smog, black carbon and East Asia’s contribution to global 
warming
 
FISHERIES AND SEAS
+Fisheries: exploitation of marine species 
+Aquaculture: East Asian problems and solutions
+Coastlines: confronting the challenges of development and pollution
 
FORESTS AND AGRICULTURE 
+Deforestation: resource exploitation in East and Southeast Asia
+Agriculture: land, development and feeding a growing population
+Food and the environment: sustainability and changing diets in East Asia

BIODIVERISTY
+Extinction: biodiversity and the loss of habitat
+Epidemics and disease: animal-human relationships in East Asia
+“Natural wonders”: leisure, ecotourism and development

ENERGY AND CLIMATE CHANGE
+Fossil fuels: East Asian consumption and contributions to climate change
+Climate impacts: vulnerability and adaptation in East Asia
+Alternative energy: East Asian policy responses

Each chapter should provide a comprehensive review of the issues, focusing on 
how society and policymaking combine in efforts within and among countries of 
the region to respond to environmental and resource challenges. Chapters should 
be 7,000-8,000 words in length (including references), with a deadline of late 
October 2012.
 
If you would like to be involved in this major project, please email us by 10 
April 2012. Please include the following information: (1) your contact 
information and professional affiliation; (2) the chapter (or chapters) you 
might like to write, with an abstract or your initial ideas on proposed 
content; and (3) a summary of your qualifications for writing the chapter, 
ideally including a list of your publications related to the topic (a link to 
your website would suffice if it provides this information). 
 
We hope to issue invitations before the end of April.
