Dear all,

Making good to my promise, I am forwarding the responses I received to my
query. My original request is below.

"I have searched for some more recent work on NGO influence for a piece I
am writing, and I think the most recent (generalized, more theoretical and
empirical) stuff I have seen has been the Betsill and Corell edited volume
with contributions by Gulbrandsen and Andresen and a few others. I am more
specifically looking for pieces on NGO influence in water policy and/or
toxics. It's clear from my survey of the literature that there has been a
whole slew of work on NGO influence on fisheries, climate and forest
policies, but I can't seem to find anything/much on water and/or toxics
policy (except, of course, and not to toot my own horn, my own work on
transnational NGO influence on Mexican toxics policy). Maybe I have missed
some key pieces? (it's not unlikely - there is a sea of citations on NGO
influence right now!)"

And these are the responses I received, alongside individual credits (these
were much less numerous so I'm able to credit individually). Thanks to
everyone who contributed to both of my queries.

Best,
Raul

>From Paul Steinberg

“The "dirty dozen" pesticides of the UN POPs treaty was lifted directly
from the dirty dozen campaign of Pesticide Action Network International.
I'm not sure if/where that has been written up, but I worked at that NGO and
the dozen pesticides and campaign name are the same, and all parties
involved know that the NGO developed this well before the UN treaty.”

“Sanjeev Khagram's work is highly relevant - role of coalition in anti-dam
activism leading up to the WCD recommendations: Khagram, S. 2004. Dams and
Development: Transnational Struggles for Water and Power. Ithaca, NY:
Cornell University Press.

Rather than focusing on NGOs, much of the water literature has recognized
the role of networks that may include NGOs, but also academics, and some
bureaucrats. For that argument, the following references would be useful:

Ken Conca's work highlights the role of transnational networks more
generally (not specific to NGOs, but in some cases, they are a key actor)
in anti-dam activism, the proliferation of IWRM, and the
anti-"marketization/privatization" debates: Conca, K. 2005. Governing
Water: Contentious Transnational Politics and Global Institution Building.
Cambridge: MIT Press.

Robert Varady's work does not focus on NGOs, but on a network of water
experts, so may still be of interest? Varady, R. G., and Iles-Shih, M.
2009. Global water initiatives: what do the experts think? Report on a
survey of leading figures in the 'World of Water'. Ch 1, pp 53-101 in
Biswas, A. K. and C. Tortajada (editors.), Impacts of Megaconferences on
the Water Sector. London: Springer-Verlag.

Jan Sendzimir's work in the Tisza River basin:

“Henrik Selin's 2010 book addresses NGO influence on toxics issues. "Global
Governance of Hazardous Chemicals."”

Via Michele Betsill, I received several articles that are relevant that I’m
happy to put in a shared Dropbox if someone might want them, or forward
them.
