I want to commission a lengthy and critical review essay on nature-based tourism and conservation, using as a trigger for the essay Clem Tisdell and Clevo Wilson's new book of the same name,: Nature-based Tourism and Conservation: New Economic Insights and Case Studies (Northampton, MA: Edward Elgar, 2012).
The review essay, which I would expect would run to + or - 6,000 words (perhaps longer), will be published in a forthcoming issue of JIWLP. The central purpose of the essay will be to assess, based on this new book and related other evidence, whether nature-based tourism is, on balance, good for wildlife, or at least some species of wildlife in at least some parts of the world, or not. This is a substantial book, at rather more than 500 pp., and a retail price in the hardcover edition of close to $200.00. It pulls together a body of work the authors - both Australians and based at academic institutions in Queensland - have been developing since 1999. Of particular interest to the readers of JIWLP, the book has chapters assessing the relationships between tourism, protected areas, and nature conservation in Antarctica and in rain forests. There are also chapters looking at nature tourism associated with particular species, namely sea turtles, whales, penguins and other sea birds, and tree kangaroos. I will provide gratis a copy of the book. If you are seriously interested in this subject and ready to write a substantial review essay on this topic by a date certain, to be negotiated, please contact me OFF-LIST at [email protected] I am also happy to entertain suggestions about prospective authors.
