Hi everyone,

Earlier this year I had the pleasure of co-teaching a course with Mary Evelyn
Tucker and John Grim, co-founders and directors of the Forum on Religion and
Ecology. Our course took its title from a well-known Thomas Berry line: “The
universe is a communion of subjects, not a collection of objects.” In our case,
the line referenced not only the diversity of life forms in the universe, but
also a diversity of disciplinary subjects being brought together in an unusual
and productive way.

Students from the schools of divinity, law, and forestry and environmental
studies worked in small interdisciplinary groups to host a series of dynamic
speakers over the course of the semester. The students led an intensive seminar
discussion with each speaker addressing major issues and themes at the
intersection of law, environment, and religion. The students also conducted a
podcast interview with each speaker focusing on more personal, biographical
matters such as how the speaker’s background, belief system, and life
experiences have informed their work concerning the environment. The seminars
and interviews have been recorded and are now available online for any who
might be interested.
