like riley, i have tremendous respect for the work of the stockholm
environmental institute . . .

that said, i would suggest that the issue is at least in part an empirical
question . . .

think tanks have not been a focus of research for me,

but i would expect that for various reasons a think tank does tend to build a
brand . . .

that is not to say that a think tank does not try to incorporate creative and
critical perspectives . . .

it is to say that any particular think tank will select for some kinds of
creativity and critique, and reject others . . .

for me, this implies that a think tank that looks fairly diverse and reflective
to a liberal,

may look very narrow and insular to a conservative, and vice versa . . .

Okay, cool. I haven't looked at the list in detail and frankly don't know many
of the organisations, so wouldn't be able to tell an anti-environment
organisation from a any other one. It just wasn't clear to me that the emails
below were referring to a selection of the organisations listed in the ranking.

Thanks for clarifying!

Richard,

I and the others I assume are definitely NOT referring to organizations like
Stockholm Environment Institute, but the numerous conservative think tanks
that, among other things, have an extremely strong anti-environmental
agenda--as Mayer and a vast amount of scholarly literature makes clear.

We just need more balance along the lines that SEI brings.

Riley

Interesting conversation. You may or may not be surprised to hear that some
people on these email lists actually work for organisations featured in this
think-tank ranking. I'd like to think that we're not clueless heads-in-the-sand
defenders of the status quo appearing out of nowhere and offering for hire a
patina of legitimacy to governments. But you may see it differently.

All the best,

Richard

Yes, and the real danger is that when governments engage in “stakeholder”
involvement, it’s often restricted to these kind of organizations. It provides
a patina of legitimacy without necessarily reflecting the interests of many
sectors of society. wil

I agree. And you can get a great sense of how this has happened from Jane
Mayer's just-released book, Dark Money: The Hidden History of the Billionries
Behind the Rise of the Radical Right (Doubleday), as these think tanks did not
just appear out of nowhere.

How depressing! Most of those listed among the 'top' are heads-in-the-stand
defenders of the status quo with little clue about the extent and causes of the
turbulence in today's world.
