Left Coast Political Ecology Workshop: Why Political Ecology Now?

26-28 January 2018

University of California, Berkeley

Please join Left Coast Political Ecology
<http://www.leftcoastpoliticalecology.org/> for a 2-day workshop addressing
the question of political ecology’s responsibility in the present moment.

Theoretically, in this workshop we aim to engender conversations around
political ecology’s (PE’s) current engagements with racism and colonialism,
as well as how we might strengthen our work toward anti-capitalist and
anti-fascist ends. These questions are also methodological. The weekend
will include workshops on research methods that help us extend our work
with non-academic communities and develop tools for critical ethnography
and participatory research. We hope to cultivate a collective dialogue
among West coast scholars at all stages of their careers, as well as to
provide opportunities for new collaborations and senior-junior mentorships
to grow.

Our aim is to gather an intimate group for a two-day workshop aimed at
building our own internal networks, and building out towards future
collaboration and cross-pollination. We hope people will come away from
this event with new directions or stronger convictions of existing paths in
their own PE research and/or activism. We hope for an invigorating weekend
together.

The workshop will feature a keynote talk by Dr. Jade Sasser, “Climate
Activism, Reproductive Justice, and Anticipation: Navigating the
Intersections,” followed by a Q&A, from 6:30-7:30 pm on Friday, January 26,
2018.

Bio:

Jade S. Sasser is Assistant Professor of Gender and Sexuality Studies at
the University of California, Riverside. She holds a PhD in Environmental
Science, Policy & Management and an MA in Cultural Anthropology from the
University of California, Berkeley, and an MPH from Boston University. Her
forthcoming book manuscript, Making Sexual Stewards: Population, Climate
Activism, and Social Justice in the New Millennium, explores activism
linking climate change with women’s reproductive rights in international
development. Her broader research interests are focused on gender and
environment, international development, and women’s health.

More information on costs and logistics for the workshop will come in early

Who are we?
Left Coast Political Ecology (LCPE) is an interdisciplinary cohort of
political ecologists, formed in 2014 by a group of PhD students and faculty
located along the West Coast of the United States and Canada. “LCPE” has
expanded over the years to indicate a critical commitment that exceeds
geographic as well as disciplinary boundaries. Through workshops,
mentorship, public scholarship, and collaborative research, we seek to
create venues for critical dialogue around emerging methodological and
theoretical horizons in political ecology. We welcome new members at all
stages of their scholarly development and with any affiliation. Please
contact us at [email protected] to join our listserv.
