Key responsibilities

Due to the growth of our programme, we are looking to hire 5 assistant 
professors of political science. The appointment includes teaching introductory 
and advanced courses reflecting the candidate’s expertise, supervising MSc and 
BSc theses, conducting scholarly research, acquiring external research funding, 
and participating in the intellectual and administrative life of the Institute 
(i.e., department). It could also include teaching general introductory 
courses, working groups, and/or co-supervising PhD theses.

All applicants should be trained in one or more of the major sub-disciplines 
(e.g., comparative politics, international relations, political philosophy) and 
in research methods appropriate to their field and interests. All 
specialisations will be considered, but we are especially interested in 
applicants working on Asian and Chinese politics and foreign policy, US 
politics and foreign policy, international environmental politics, 
international conflict resolution, politics of international law, international 
political economy, comparative public policy, and political behaviour. 
Applicants who are prepared to teach research design, qualitative and/or 
quantitative research methods should outline their relevant training and/or 
teaching experience in their applications.

Selection criteria

Applicants must hold (or be near to completing) a PhD in Political Science or a 
cognate discipline;
Applicants must have a promising research agenda, some scholarly publications, 
teaching experience and good teaching evaluations;
Applicants must be able to teach in English; ability to teach in Dutch is a 
plus. Staff who do not speak Dutch are required to progress steadily towards 
Dutch competence through training financed by the institute;
Leiden University requires teaching staff to obtain the University Teaching 
Qualification (BKO). If the successful applicant does not already possess this 
qualification or its equivalent, s/he must obtain this qualification within two 
years.

Our Faculty/Institute

The Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences comprises four institutes: 
Education and Child Studies, Political Science, Psychology and Cultural 
Anthropology & Development Sociology. The Faculty also includes the Centre for 
Science and Technology Studies. The Faculty is home to 5,000 students and 600 
members of staff. Our teaching and research programmes cover diverse topics 
varying from adoption to political behaviour.

The Institute of Political Science has a strong research tradition in various 
areas of comparative, Dutch and international politics, as well as political 
theory. The Institute has around 80 academic staff, including many non-Dutch 
scholars, and houses a number of editorships of international refereed journals 
and book series. Members of the institute are also involved in a number of the 
university’s multi-disciplinary research centres, including Central and East 
European Studies, International Relations, Parties and Representation, and 
Political Philosophy. The Institute is based in Leiden but a large and growing 
part of the teaching is done nearby in The Hague.

The Institute offers a range of taught programmes at the Bachelor and Master 
levels and trains PhD students in political science. The BSc programmes include 
general Political Science (in Dutch & English, in Leiden), International 
Politics (in Dutch & English, in Leiden), and International Relations and 
Organisations (in English, in The Hague). The one-year MSc programme (taught 
mostly in English) includes four specialisations in Leiden and two in The Hague.

Terms and conditions

The position starts as soon as possible, preferably in January 2019. The 
appointment will be made on a temporary contract of up to 3 years depending 
upon prior experience. A permanent appointment may be possible during or after 
the term of the initial contract, depending upon performance (in teaching, 
research and administration) and the budgetary situation of the Institute. 
Salary range from € 3,545 to € 4,852 gross per month (pay scale 11 in 
accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).
