Mine live in not much more than 60 degrees and seem comfortable.

You're right about providing bedding and perhaps an enclosed place to
huddle together.  Mine use their constant supply of boxes, plus variously
a half-log and remodeled burrows in the CareFresh.

Last summer they lived on a covered deck with temps ranging from 48-80
degrees.  They were happier there, I believe.

Suggestion:  Speak with the dad who has banished the gerbils to the
basement.  Perhaps he thinks they smell as bad as rats or other wildlife?
You could suggest that he keep his nose cocked, and perhaps relent after
he's convinced.
