The experts will give you more advice but here's a little:
** Get your new friend another gerbil as a companion. Gerbils are so
social that they don't do well as loners.
** Get a fix on age of your gerbil. Ask the store about when he/she was
born.
** What kind of companion, and how careful you have to be about
introducing them, depends on ages and sexes. You can mix two without
concern for sex (actually, two females are more likely to fight) -- but
they might need formal introductions. (See refs. below.)
** Do you want pups or not? (Consider what you will do with them because
they multiply like mad.)

Those two can take you a long way. (BTW -- experts say that gerbils
books are junk.) I personally found it useful to read all the FAQ, then
to understand what was available at NGS Index (which cannot be consumed in
many sittings).
