You know you are a gerbil slave when you make a special house for them in ceramic [being careful that all materials used are nontoxic safe etc.] only to have them use it as a latrine! That is what happened to me. The house resembles an adobe mission such are seen in the South West USA and is really lovely. Thank goodness I glazed the inside to facilitate cleaning.
