Subject: question...
hi all,
i have a question about female gerbils. i have
three girls living in a cage thats about 20 gallons but is very
spaceous. Would there chances of fighting be high? becuz my friend kt (
of the rogue clan) had three girls living together in a 10 gallon tank(
i think) and they fought so she had to seperate one of them. Would this
happen to me? or r the chances of it happening less bebause of the tank
size?thanx a lot
                          Jamie

If they are going to fight because of dominance issues the size of the
tank doesn't matter. Sometimes, groups live together all their lives
with no problem. While there are some gerbils who resist all atttemps of
receiving a companion. Here are some tips given by David Hinsley that
might help deal with female trios.

David writes - Subject: Keeping Female Gerbils Together
We have had a few emails asking about our policy of keeping female
Gerbils together in the same enclosure. We have found the best way to
allow female Gerbils together is to take the following steps:
1. Make sure that no male enclosures are in the same room as the female
ones, especially in the evening and at night.
2. Never let them grow bored, which means giving their enclosures plenty
to do like toys, constant stream of cardboard boxes etc. Chewing
cardboard does work off tensions and if you put a big box into the
enclosure they work like mad then stop, returning later.
3. Make sure that there are plenty of food bowls in the enclosure so
that they do not squabble over space.
4. Put one house (ie for sleeping) per Gerbil into the enclosure, so
that they can have their personal space, if they want.
We have had some nasty experiences with females in the past and learnt
some bitter lessons along the way. Thank fully, now, we have hardly any
problems, apart from the normal "hand-bags-at-dawn" tiffs, but nothing
serious.
