Good question! I believe this can be very true for some domestic animals.
The two gerbils I have bred seem to have regulated their own pregnancy
frequency. Angel had 3 litters, 5 weeks apart; then took a hiatus of about
1 month by refusing to mate with Norm. Then she had three litters, 5 weeks
apart. Then I seperated them. Cindy had one litter when she was very,
very young, then took a two month break by refusing to mate, then had 4
litters every 5 weeks and then refused to get pregnant again. Eventually I
seperated Cindy from Mike/Ike.

Although I am certainly not the gerbil expert that others are, I can tell
you my experience. Both Angel and Cindy occassionally took breaks from
motherhood by refusing to mate with their respective mates. I did nothing
to help or hinder them.

Hope that helps!
