In English it is the same "a" as in "about". The "a" is the same sound
as the "er" in "potter".

I deliberately chose the example of potter because it is a different "a"
than the one in "apple", "America" or "age". In other words, it is
"er-goo-tee" and not "ay-goo-tee" or "ah-goo-tee"

Of course in the US you may pronounce any of these words differently. I
am basing my descriptions on standard usage of English as described in
English dictionaries.
