Hi Kristen:

I did that a number of years ago. On the advice of a reference book, I kept the sand
relatively moist to minimize cave-ins, etc. The aquarium was connected to the gerbils
regular wire cage via 3.75cm [1.5 inch] diameter tubing.

I found that the Gerbils absolutely loved digging tunnels in their new "sand box". The
landsacape would be completely rearranged on a daily basis.

The major drawbacks included the necessity to add water to the sand almost daily to
keep it moist enough and the need to completely replace all of the sand once a week.
The latter was because the Gerbil droppings would mould and decompose in the moist
sand.

Finally, one had to take a daily census to ensure none had become trapped in the sand.
