That should not be overlooked. Heavy burrowing media can be very
dangerous and have been known to crush gerbils.
I have never experienced it myself, but I have heard people describe the
pain caused by the sound of gerbils burrowing in sand in a glass tank.
It can sound just like running your nails down a blackboard.
