Hi all,
My black gerbil, Harriet, produced four pups last
night. This was her first litter, and although I
don't know her birth date, I am guessing that she is
about 12 weeks old.
I encountered a most unusual malpresentation of the
first pup. Initially it appeared to be a normal birth,
with the pup's muzzle emerging first. However, after
almost 30 minutes of straining, Harriet was unable to
shift the pup further than this, and she appeared
distressed. I intervened to find that the pup's lower
jaw was lodged just inside the vaginal opening. I had
to gently push the pup in slightly and rotate its
head, after which she delivered it promptly,
stillborn, but of normal size. After an hour of
resting, she delivered the other three pups with no
difficulty.
Has anyone else encountered a birth where the pup's
open mouth prevented delivery?
