OK, she is definitely a she. So, the consensus seems to be that I pair her
with a same-size gerbil rather than a baby? I've just about got a split
cage set up and want to try to do this right, if possible.

There is some evidence that choosing a smaller gerbil just makes it more
difficult for females (males it is the opposite).
