Actually, the thing you want to use here is Silicon Sealant, which is
available at any hardware store, and is also sold at some pet stores as
Aquarium Sealant. This is the same stuff that is used to put the aquariums
together in the first place, and is quite safe for the gerbils. You must be
able to let it cure for 24-48 hours before the gerbils can be put in the
tank though, as the vapors can be harmful (it smells like strong vinegar
when it's not cured). You will need a small caulking gun to apply the
sealant, and you must be sure that what you get is 100% silicon, some
sealants that are out there contain other chemicals which aren't good for
the gerbils.

Hi Jason,

I'm not an expert so I will not answer the question of territory and
fighting is you were to put the gerbils together. But I do have a
suggestion. I have a 33 gallon long aquarium that I would like to use at
one point in the future. I do not want to put more than a pair in any given
home. What a waist of a 33 gallon aquarium, it is huge! (So I can only
imagine what a 50 gallon looks like.) What I am contemplating doing is
having a local hardware store cut a piece of Plexiglas to fit snuggly into
the center of the tank. I know that from past experience with fish that it
is possible to by the rubbery glue that is used in aquarium. (sometimes the
leak) This would make the center wall strong enough so that the gerbils
could not push it over.

Oh well, just an idea.
Janet
