a.. Gerbils hate water as much as cats do, but there is a way to wash them
just not the way you're thinking. Go to your local pet store and buy some
Chinchilla Dust or Sand Bath. It is a very fine grey powder that you put
into a dish for your gerbils to roll in. Give them 15 minutes and if they
don't figure it out just sprincle it on them and they will shake it off
along with the greasey coat and that yucky smell.

b.. Call your newspaper company and ask if the ink is nontoxic. It should
be, but don't risk it. Just about anything (magazines, junk mail, tissues,
toilet paper, napkines) can be used for bedding as longe as the ink is
non-toxic. You can also make toys for them using non-toxic childrens' glue
or hot glue.

c.. Are your gerbils in a wire cage? This is common for gerbils in wire
cages, they don't have anything or not much to scratch on to file them down.
They do the same for their teeth. They chew on wood and plastic and
anything else you put in their cage to keep their teeth from growing too
long. You can cut gerbils nails with baby or animal nail clipers though I
imagine it would take a long time to get them to keep still. You should be
keeping them in a glass tank (aquarium) with a homemade or atore bought wire
mesh lid. Then they will dig in the corners and file their nails down
themselves.

I hope I have helped a little. Good luck!

God bless,

Hi I'm sorta new to gerbil raising. I have 2 male Gerbils, one gray and one
golden brown. I was hoping someone could answer these questions of mine.

a.. Can you wash a gerbil? It smells a little funny
b.. Is newspaper okay as bedding
c.. How do I clip their nails? They feel like little pinches and they
sometimes scatch me leaving a white mark.
Thanks

Ken
