The way a scanner works is basically the same as a copier, and if you've
ever tried to copy something like your hand, you'll notice that the only
part that turns out is the part that is actually touching the glass.  If you
tried this, you would most likely get nothing but the feet of the gerbils.
But as for the light, technically no, it's not harmful, it's just the same
as a camera flash if you're taking pictures of your gerbs.

If you put a pair of gerbils in a plastic critter case and put this on
to a scanner, can they be scanned? Are the scanning lights harmful?

Im thinking of scanning my Leopard geckos because im not sure if I have
a male. I wont scan them if its harmful.
