Cedar contains highly irritant aromatic hydrocarbons. That is why it
smells so nice and why insects wisely stay away.

Regular exposure to cedar and other highly aromatic woods is known to
cause respiratory and liver disease in humans who work with the wood,
and to rats and other laboratory rodents who live on cedar based litter.

Cedar has been implicated in nose and eye problems in gerbils and
respiratory illness, leading to death, in new-born pups.

There is a lot of info on the web about cedar. Basically, it is
something worth avoiding.
