Well, gerbils usually don't eat "live" babies, do you think the babies might
have been died already?  Because I have a mother that had a stillborn pup
that had died already, and she ate it (to keep the nest clean for the other
pup probably).  But it is very rare that gerbil mothers just eat living pups.
