As you know, I'm currently technically homeless, waiting in limbo to leave
Fairbanks to the arid desert of Tucson, Arizona. All my critters are living
in a small, smelly camper whilst my husband and I stay at a friend's house.
With the aquariums packed by the movers, the rodents all live in small
cages, contained in boxes to keep their bedding from being strewn about in
the camper.

Yesterday I finally replaced the red shag carpet in the camper with some
carpet scraps we've acquired from garage sales. As I was about to leave the
camper, I happen to glance down at Angel's small cage. There she was, with
her leg entangled in the bars of the wire that makes the second level in the
cage, desperately struggling to get her leg free. In vain, I put my hand in
the cage and tried to free her leg. I knew I needed to get the cage taken
apart and was worried about losing control of her in the crowded,
ferret-infested camper. So, I grabbed her cage and rushed into the house
yelling for my husband as Milwaukee, the household dalmatian, tried to
determine what wonderful smell came from that cage.

My husband met me in the kitchen and we quickly removed the cage from it's
base. Ever so carefully, Tovan extricated Angel's leg from it's
entanglement as I eyed the three housecats that wondered what we were doing.
Angel behaved quite admirably for having had her leg stuck for who knows
how long. Instead of darting out of the cage into the waiting arms of
hungry cats, she quietly (and quickly) ran to the cover of her large nest.
We watched her closely and noticed a limp but the leg did not seem to be
held at any strange angle, so we concluded that Angel survived her ordeal.

With the second level removed from the cage, Angel seems to be quite herself
again. The best way to describe the entanglement is to say that the leg was
weaved in and out of two of the bars of the wire. I am at a loss as to how
she managed to so entangle herself.

Until further developments in my journey South,

Deb Adams
