When there weren't/aren't any disputes with more dominant cage
inhabitants (I would assume such a thing), it isn't quite normal for
social animals.

Thinking about it, I came to the conclusion, religious motivated he may
have decided for himself to live the life of a hermit?? ;o))
For more information look at the "church of gerbils" webpage
http://www.corg.org/

In nature, such a timid behavior may have some evolutional advantages
depending on the situation and the predators around? Don't know...
And I also don't know, more doubt it, if breeding from him may
lead to an unsocial but nevertheless happy(?) living gerbil strain.
