I remember a long discussion of this very issue when this first came up!

single letters were preferred as they didn't take up too much room in
the subject window.

The letters were placed at the end for two reasons. One it didn't make a
mess when some mail software insists on putting Re: at the beginning of
the subject line, and secondly, :m cannot be confused as part of normal
text by humans or machines because it never normally arises. Putting m:
can easily confuse machines and could confuse people because a colon
following a letter often crops up in normal usage.
