Could you summarize the intent and use of threadmarkers, Julian?

I haven't been able to use them to make reading more easy, perhaps because
I don't understand how.  As mentioned, I've tried diligently for a couple
periods to put them on Subject when I posted.  IMHO people don't put them
on subjects, at either end, because they don't see the benefits.
