I think some good things to look at when searching for a vet for any
animal are cleanliness and reputation. Take a look around the offices,
waiting rooms, etc... These should be very clean. Believe it or not I
went to a vet once and the place was disgustingly dirty. If you wouldn't
even want to eat there, you definitely don't want any kind of medical
procedure done there. As for reputation, see if you can find other
people who take their animals there. Ask around, talk to the people in
the waiting room. If they've had good experiences, chances are you will
too. Also, there's a website I just found called the Pet Care Forum.
It's run by vets and pet lovers. One of the features was finding a vet
for your reptile. It was part of the "Are you moving and looking for a
good vet" section. If you can find a vet for your iguana, certainly you
can find one for your gerbils! The address is www.vin.com/petcare You
have to register for things like chats and message boards, but I think
everything else is open to the public.
