I recall discussing this in the past. It was said that eggs can transmit
salmonella (spelling?) bacteria onto the egg carton making the egg carton
not a good choice to give your gerbils. Maybe someone else may know more on
this.

Also, cardboard used in the freezer for food is not good because of the wax
coating.
