Gerbils almost always survive this without any problem. Although it may
bleed at first, the exposed bone should dry up and drop off over the
next couple of weeks.
Although the tail will not regrow, the gerbil will not notice the
difference.
Just look out for any sign of swelling or discharge. If so you should
consult a vet urgently as the rest of the tail may need to be amputated.
Please note that this is necessary in only a very small number of cases.
