Whenever my animals have surgery, the vet routinely gives them a shot of
anti-inflammatory to guard against pain. PRobably your vet did too. I
doubt your gerbil is actually in pain. He's just a little bemused at the
scar and is dying to chew the stitches. Also some gerbils take longer to
get over the anaesthetic than others. They can be a bit sleepy and off
their food for up to a couple of days.
I wouldn't worry. I'm sure he will be just fine
