You have to keep gerbil nature in mind. It just isn't in their nature to enjoy being
picked up, held, and petted. They much prefer to climb up your arm and sit on your
shoulder and such. That way they are in control of things, at least to a certain
extent. My gerbils are extremely tame and love to climb all over me, but 99% of them
make at least a token protest when I have to pick them up for some reason. I usually
don't bother, I just stick my arm in the tank and wait a moment, they'll be on me in a
jiffy!
