I suppose the key is whether they chew it or not.

I've been using hemp with my Deermice for about 2 years with no problems. I was a 
little concerned about the strong odour at first but apparently it is not critical.

However, I have never used hemp with my Gerbils, Degus, Chins etc and don't plan to, 
mainly because of expense.
